Samsung makes ads on $3,499 smart fridges official with upcoming software update

Samsung makes ads on $3,499 smart fridges official with upcoming software update

Update introduces two ways for the fridges to show ads.

I had to ask AI what a smart fridge even does beyond cooling your food. Aside from having a screen for photos and watching vids on the door (stuff you could just do on your ipad), it said smart fridges have:

      • Interior cameras so you can check what’s inside while at the grocery store
      • Inventory tracking and expiration date reminders
      • Integration with your phone for shopping lists
      • Temperature controls you can adjust remotely

I maybe adjust the temperature twice in the lifetime of the fridge so the last one sounds useless to me and, if it really was a smart fridge, shouldn’t it be able to do it itself? And the other shit sounds like it would be hella flaky and unreliable.

Not to mention hackable and so stuff destroyed, lists monkeyed with, doxing what’s in your fridge etc.

They were pushing that crap at the computer show I went to in the era of Newton handhelds and DEC Alpha, first time I laid eyes on a Linux machine. Useless shit I didn’t want then or now.

Ya had to be the Comdex or CES 1995. Sony DVD intro, a bunch of sad Apple nuts whaling on their Newtons, Allied General on display, Citrix in its original form- and Novell had the smart refrigerator display. Annnnnnyday now.

This could go in the China thread but I’m not convinced the non-Chinese smart-devices are all that much better:

This just makes me so mad

tl;dw: Chinese manufacturer repeatedly remotely bricks a guy’s robo-vacuum because he keeps blocking the address it was sending its spyware data to.

I needed wifi-enabled sockets (I have 3 lights which are actually grow lights for the plants in winter, and I want them to be on not only when someone’s in the room), and it was quite difficult to get ones that don’t just send everything to a cloud in China.

I have a number of WiFi enabled monitoring and control devices.

You guys worry about using Telegram, well, the Chinese probably own me.

The first remote devices I installed are Honeywell Thermostats. I also have Lyric and PROA7PLUS Honeywell alarm systems.

For years now I have been using TP-Link products, specifically WiFi extenders.

I decided to add WiFi monitoring for specific commercial AC powered devices and at first I ordered Govee Smart Plugs, but then I discovered that they have known vulnerabilities, so I returned them and went with TP-Link Tapo Smart Plugs instead.

Mostly it’s their routers that are known to be vulnerable:

Yes, TP-Link products have been reported to have significant cybersecurity vulnerabilities, which have raised concerns about their potential exploitation by threat actors. The U.S. government is considering banning these products due to these security risks.

Then there are Eufy doorbell cameras (I have six of those.)
There is my Security camera system from Reolink

                          Sonos WiFi connected audio systems

Schlage smart locks - I’ve got seven of those.

Light switches? I’ve got too many Lutron Caseta devices to count.
SafeSense temperature and humidity monitoring of my new wine cellar.
                          Residio hot water heater monitoring.
SmartHQ WiFi connected AC system in my cottage.

                          Eufy outdoor lighting

Monitor and control of my GMC Yukon

                          Jesus

These things were added gradually over a period of years.

But I do have a lot of safeguards on my browser!!!

One thing I do avoid are integrated systems.

If I lose control of something, I lose control of that one thing.

                              No.

But you can ask some Chinaman to supply it to you, probably for a small fee.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Its bog simple, no frills text editing without fancy features actually was its main feature. I was also thinking, I wonder how long before they realize that and recreate the simple notepad and maybe call it “note” or “pad” but then I remembered they released this back in May:

                                        f947ad92-ec29-4c25-95ac-f20909bac532-image.png

It’s a.command line program so most normies will never find it or use it but I guess it might be handy for devs and tech people for quick edits. Since it’s open source, I’m kind of hoping it replaces nano as the default command line editor on a lot of Linux installs. I install nvim for any machine I’m going to be using a lot but I’d much prefer the above edit program to nano.

@Hog said in The OFFICIAL tech stuff thread:

Windows Notepad is getting support for tables and streaming AI:

                                          Gators right now:

a man in a suit and tie is dancing in a living room while a woman sits on a couch .

M$ is so hell bent on embedding AI in everything in Windows that I am more and more likely to join your Linux cult. Have fun being my tech support.

@Poo, my joystick drivers are broken again…can we get on a Zoom call and fix them?

i must admit to tinkering with that idea … but slightly put off by how it will effect my gaming
