I have a number of WiFi enabled monitoring and control devices.

You guys worry about using Telegram, well, the Chinese probably own me.

The first remote devices I installed are Honeywell Thermostats. I also have Lyric and PROA7PLUS Honeywell alarm systems.

For years now I have been using TP-Link products, specifically WiFi extenders.

I decided to add WiFi monitoring for specific commercial AC powered devices and at first I ordered Govee Smart Plugs, but then I discovered that they have known vulnerabilities, so I returned them and went with TP-Link Tapo Smart Plugs instead.

Mostly it’s their routers that are known to be vulnerable:

Yes, TP-Link products have been reported to have significant cybersecurity vulnerabilities, which have raised concerns about their potential exploitation by threat actors. The U.S. government is considering banning these products due to these security risks.

Then there are Eufy doorbell cameras (I have six of those.)
There is my Security camera system from Reolink

      Sonos WiFi connected audio systems

Schlage smart locks - I’ve got seven of those.

Light switches? I’ve got too many Lutron Caseta devices to count.
SafeSense temperature and humidity monitoring of my new wine cellar.
      Residio hot water heater monitoring.
SmartHQ WiFi connected AC system in my cottage.

      Eufy outdoor lighting

Monitor and control of my GMC Yukon

      Jesus

These things were added gradually over a period of years.

But I do have a lot of safeguards on my browser!!!

One thing I do avoid are integrated systems.

If I lose control of something, I lose control of that one thing.

          No.

But you can ask some Chinaman to supply it to you, probably for a small fee.

I needed wifi-enabled sockets (I have 3 lights which are actually grow lights for the plants in winter, and I want them to be on not only when someone’s in the room), and it was quite difficult to get ones that don’t just send everything to a cloud in China.

Fucking hell that’s exactly what I don’t want. Notepad should be the clean stupid text scrubbed of codes editor. They can do word pad or textpad for jacked up utility stuff.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Its bog simple, no frills text editing without fancy features actually was its main feature. I was also thinking, I wonder how long before they realize that and recreate the simple notepad and maybe call it “note” or “pad” but then I remembered they released this back in May:

                    f947ad92-ec29-4c25-95ac-f20909bac532-image.png

It’s a.command line program so most normies will never find it or use it but I guess it might be handy for devs and tech people for quick edits. Since it’s open source, I’m kind of hoping it replaces nano as the default command line editor on a lot of Linux installs. I install nvim for any machine I’m going to be using a lot but I’d much prefer the above edit program to nano.

M$ is so hell bent on embedding AI in everything in Windows that I am more and more likely to join your Linux cult. Have fun being my tech support.

@Poo, my joystick drivers are broken again…can we get on a Zoom call and fix them?

There is the old favorite Notepad++. It has a lot of other shit in it, but I mostly use it for notes and random shit. I got addicted to it years ago because the tabs persist and you don’t lose everything when you accidentally shut down notepad. It took M$ I think until Win11 to match that feature. It was also very useful long ago for syntax highlighting and previewing very large CSVs, but you can do that in IDEs now.

                          Notepad++
