I’ve got this guy I’ve been working with for a month or so. He needs to regularly schedule meetings with up to five people in five different time zones. Every time he manually asks everyone individually, what time are you free tomorrow? Me: I don’t know, use the scheduling assistant. Then he asks me to convert it into the HQ time zone. Me: use the scheduling assistant. Then he asks me what time I finish work. Me: use the scheduling assistant. Then he asks what time that is in the HQ time zone. Me: dude, I’m trying to fucking code here, use the scheduling assistant.

After doing the dance several times now, I’ve posted screenshots of how to use the scheduling assistant. Not that he’s ever asked for them or acknowledged that there even is a scheduling assistant.

Anyway, I’m no longer going to take that scheduling assistant for granted. Having to do every meeting the way this guy does it would be unspeakably bad. I’d spend half of my day manually coordinating meetings.

We force people to use it, but does no good for external vendors.

You can now buy a flame-throwing robot dog for under $10,000

Thermonator, the first “flamethrower-wielding robot dog,” is completely legal in 48 US states.

“completely legal in 48 US states”

I need a pack of them to loose upon the ROUSs… ermm, RsOUS.

I wonder if Bushman will get some and come by for a day or 2. I had found his number and rang him up a few years ago, but then I lost it. These would be right up his alley. Anybody got his contact info?

        I don’t think they exist.

I think they do exist. A day or three ago I heard part of a radio story on NPR about the Therminator now being offered for sale.

This is why we need the three laws of robotics.

        We won’t get them.

More like we are heading for the Bulterian Jihad.

I can see this guy’s working hours and busy times in it so I assume he should be able to see mine. Assumptions are bad though.

I’m actually thinking of this as a public service. It’s also going to be crap later on, just much more subtle crap.

@tigger I kind of feel it’s going to go the other way. It’s going to be crap later on but even worst and more noticeably crap. Assuming Google doesn’t change course or some other search engine doesn’t replace them, they are starving the real content creators that feed both their search results and AI answers. Take those guys away and you’ll have a runaway cycle of worst and worst results.

Sure, but the most blatant issues are going to go away and you’ll get systematically wrong stuff that will take you hours to figure out IMO once all the logic to make sure you don’t glue your pizza is hardwired in. Plus the chance that whole swaths of AI feeding AI will be somehow systematically swayed to do something.

It will be ok, right? Reddit posters know what they are talking about…

In place of these sites, there’s one platform you’ll be seeing much, much more of: Reddit. According to SEMrush, Reddit saw a surge that amounted to a 126% growth in traffic from Google Search.

MSI's new motherboard could transform gaming RAM forever

The new MSI Z790 Project Zero Plus is shown with a flat Kingston DDR5 CAMM memory module, which screws into place, rather than DIMMs.

PC component maker MSI has just unveiled a new ATX motherboard that abandons the usual memory sticks we’ve known for decades, and replaces them with a new flat-mounted CAMM2 RAM module. It’s a concept that has potentially huge implications for the PC gaming RAM market if it takes off, meaning we could just be screwing future memory upgrades into our motherboards, rather than clicking them into slots.

Dude, seriously. That has to be the most wankish statement I’ve ever read.

You only say that because you haven’t eaten enough small rocks with your titebond pizza.

Can’t you fix this shit Tigger?

Only the stockmarket can fix this…

But don’t they have secret math wizards running their algorithms? Can’t you appeal wizard to wizard?

They do, but currently the optimization goal is to push as much AI stuff as possible to boost up the stock price. LLMs are super amazing. But they aren’t really super amazing in the way that they are being sold, IMHO.

If you ask me, the whole bubble is going to burst. Google and everyone who sells AI APIs are giving money to AI startups to make them buy AI services from themselves, showing to the market that the API sales are going up. I’m no market analyst, in fact I seem to be pretty systematically making the wrong calls, but I can’t see how this ends well. If I were Sundar, I’d try to focus the market on the fundamentals and say the others (OpenAI+Microsoft) are selling a reality that isn’t plausible.

I feel like Google search sucks and the content on the internet sucks and I just don’t see how this AI generated crap is helping. We’re getting to a place where if you want to know something, you ask on tiktok.

I think it might be worse if AI actually worked like they were hyping. All the companies would adopt it everywhere they could, which would put a ton of people out of work and then the companies go bankrupt because nobody could afford to buy their shit anymore. And the incompetent governments couldn’t react because they are full of dumbasses these days.
