Maybe it’s just my friends but Facebook seems dead these days.

Same, though some are still posting. Fortunately I don’t have much politics or “look how wonderful my life is” people on my feed. But I don’t really look at it as much anymore, especially since 90% of the posts are that recommended shit to try to get me engaged. I am less engaged because of that shit because I can’t find the posts from my friends that I want to see.

So much this. It used to be worth wading through the relatives who post a dozen times a day to find the post by someone I hadn’t heard from in a long while. Now it’s just as likely the algorithm has decided to never show me that post no matter how many of their unrequested videos and memes I have to scroll through.

I use messenger a lot still because I prefer to write to my friends using a keyboard instead of texting them, but I rarely post on FB nowadays.

Recently the federal govt passed a law forcing the big tech companies like Meta and Google to negotiate advertising revenue sharing deals with traditional media. They, Meta at least, retaliated by removing all canadians news media from their content (I think you can still find some by looking for specific pages but it won’t show in your feed).

Fuck Meta and facebook.

Was going to say that traditional media should benefit from FB driving traffic to their sites where their advertising is. But like you all, I guess a lot of people don’t read past the headline before posting a reply so I guess that doesn’t work. Honestly I am getting annoyed by the amount of advertising on sites. Seems like half the sites I go to you have some shit ad after every two paragraphs that you have to scroll past. And I just click off the ones that are like top 10 something and each one is a different page.

Most platforms have stagnating user numbers and ads have dropping ctr. So in order to not decline they need to increase the number of ads. A lot of stuff that you used to have was paid by the vision of future profits. Now the future profits look bleak across the board.

I use whatsapp and signal mobile apps only when I’m AFK. Otherwise, I prefer using a keyboard on my comp to write messages, even SMSs.

I despise messenger. I can’t opt out of being open to receiving messages, sometimes calls, from 500 people I don’t really know and definitely don’t want to talk to. My wife uses it though to call me and share stuff she likes which is the only reason it’s on my phone.

I can tell you- DDR4 and 3060 card. VRAM starved and last gen. Way overpowered for normal work, shit for future proofing for games/streamer content.

@Kilemall probably good for going back and playing your back log of steam games from five years ago that used to require a desktop PC to play though.

I keep coming back to a combination of mithril.js and tailwind css. I don’t think it’s possible to build modern web apps with less code. I haven’t worked out a lightweight state solution (vuex, redux etc) and I usually get away without one for small projects anyway.

Oh ya, probably good for most titles right now actually.

It’s time to replace my gaming desktop that’s something like 11 years old, I’d like to play Star Citizen and I figure something is gonna go screwy with China and Taiwan so better to buy while it’s a semi normalized supply chain.

The thing that’s balking me are these video cards priced for the crypto boom that are just incremental money grabs.

I’ve been studying them heavily. I’m never the type to go for the 1100+ card, more the 4070 card level, but that’s 600 (fast dropping to 550), but one of the reasons my machines last so long is putting emphasis on cooling and reasonable power draw.

So I was thinking of going AMD 6700 which is a cut below 4070 but is good enough for now, putting the money into CPU and memory and cooling/power, and just planning to upgrade the video card in 3-4 years where I will end up with something more powerful anyway.

I could guess wrong though and video cards spike cause AI boom.
