This came as a shock to me:
As of October 2025, there are approximately 8,475 Starlink satellites in orbit, with plans for up to 42,000 in the future. These satellites are part of SpaceX’s effort to provide global internet coverage.
It stands to reason that there’d be a lot of them, but 8,500 headed to 42,000 was a surprise.

Yeah, it’s all basically to increase the capacity available like with cellphones. Once they started doing broadband over cellphones, the existing towers got saturated and people were dropping connections. There was a mad dash to add more towers in places like NYC to support the traffic. The amount of spectrum you own limits the amount of bandwidth in a certain area, so to get more you build more towers closer together and turn down the power so you can serve more customers. Same deal in space, the more satellites you have, the more data you can push out of a particular area. Since SpaceX is covering large areas and doing broadband over satellite, they need a lot of them.

There is a practical limit to the amount of traffic a single satellite may provide so It’s easy to see that thousands will be/are needed and this helps to the system less vulnerable to sudden destruction as well.

Do they still use the prick (PRC) 117? I’ve seen those as portable units as well as installed in planes.
I don’t think the military uses it, it’s pretty big. I watched this video talking about Operation Redwing where a bunch of Seals got killed in Afghanistan. They were using the military satcom network, but fucked up the radio settings. In the end they remembered they had an Iridium handset and used that to call for help, which they should have done in the first place.

The project uses advanced communications payloads, including optical inter-satellite links (OISLs) for high-speed data transfer between spacecraft, and has begun a series of launches to deploy its initial constellation. While the full service launch is pending the deployment of more satellites, Amazon is working to become a competitor to existing satellite internet providers like Starlink.
Amazon is way behind though. They are still launching dildos full of tourists, not even their first orbital vehicles.

@Gators1 I was watching feed for the Starship 11 launch and they ejected eight mock satellites which were referred to as “Bricks” or steel plates One commentator said they were Amazon’s and the others LOL’d.

I tried giving flight instruction to the grandson of Wiley Post, who had an air mail connection among other notable achievements.
The grandson had good flight skills but was definitely lacking on the bookwork side. He never got the math calculations correct and finally admitted that decimal points confused him, so he simply left them out, yet continued using all the numbers after the point.
So, 3.141592 became 3142592. His weight and balance calculations put the CG about 150ft behind the plane.
His grandmother, Wiley’s wife, called me and was concerned about his progress and safety. She was funding his training but knew his limitations and was hoping he would find something else to do. He had a few more lessons after his first solo flight and then quit his training.
The world was a safer place.
