Linux is probably going to get 4% desktop market share this year because of Microsoft’s shit-fuckery.

2025: THE YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP1!!11!!

Oh they’ve just begun. Master plan is to lock out Linux on commodity hardware because of ‘security concerns’.

How much you wanna bet that those “security concerns” would vanish if Linus would just give the NSA the backdoor that teh g’Dub demanded of him?

Linux isn’t inherently super secure so if I were NSA I wouldn’t spend political capital or highlight efforts that direction. EU will just spank any of that, Linux forks into secure versions, opens it up more to China/Russia, not worth it.

No I’m saying the NSA shouldn’t bother. Unless they want to talk up Linux as secure.

Speaking of the NSA and Linux security, they designed “SELinux” which most distros I’ve used recently enable by default. I deliberately don’t install it because it’s a PITA with the restrictions it puts on your system. Well, it’s a PITA to work out what the solution is when it won’t let your container recognize some service on the host. I have a lot of other security mitigations in place and I do too much screwing around with experimentation to let it slow me down. I’m down with it being installed by default for most users though.

The NSA Security-enhanced Linux Team describes NSA SELinux as[5] a set of patches to the Linux kernel and utilities to provide a strong, flexible, mandatory access control (MAC) architecture into the major subsystems of the kernel. It provides an enhanced mechanism to enforce the separation of information based on confidentiality and integrity requirements, which allows threats of tampering, and bypassing of application security mechanisms, to be addressed and enables the confinement of damage that can be caused by malicious or flawed applications. It includes a set of sample security policy configuration files designed to meet common, general-purpose security goals.

So why not use an old Linux “distro” (if that is the right word) from some time back? Something that will run a basic browser (like DDG), OpenOffice, and video DLs?

No Trump porn. Partitioned a biggly hard drive for the Linux install and ran a dual boot setup.

Worked ok at first and would ask which system i wanted to boot into whan starting but after removing and reinstalling to test the new PC I lost the dual boot choice on startup. PITA having to go into the BIOS to choose whic one i needed.

Strange that windows and Linux makes it almost impossible to locate each others files.

Because the NSA deserves access to everyone’s computers?

Well, I disagree. I think if anyone wants access to my computer, it should be up to me to decide whether to let them in or not.

Thx for answering about the NSA. I did not know that apparently routine NSA access to Linux systems had indeed become a thing sometime in the past 20 years.

@oyaji NSA can probably get anything they need by accessing one’s browsing, download history, and web traffic, through an internet provider or group chat like Discord.

Of course, if someone does get arrested and a computer is seized, they’ll just get a search warrant for it’s contents and have some 11 year old hack into it to retrieve everything else.

I did the update yesterday. Went smoothly except I got a black screen during the update and I had to manually restart my PC for it to finish.

How come that here in “The Official fuck Windows 11/Microsoft Thread”, everybody but me has downloaded it?

In that case, shouldn’t the thread really be called something more appropriate, like “The Official I Got Fuckt by Windows 11/Microsoft and Bill Gates Love Me Long Time ITB Thread”?

I’ll need to build a new PC because of this. This PC was built years ago and still plays any game I load into it. I asked Gpt for recommendations and it gave me a RTX 5090 as a reasonable choice…$2500k. How much is high end $10k!?!

                                        Not just NSA…

Billions of Calls Exposed Via Unencrypted Satellites

The Discovery: Researchers used $800 consumer satellite equipment to intercept sensitive unencrypted data from geosynchronous satellites, including military communications, personal calls, and corporate data across 40% of Earth’s surface.
Why It Matters: The vulnerability threatens privacy of millions, compromises critical infrastructure, and exposes military operations. Major companies like T-Mobile have responded with encryption, while others remain at risk.

Reminds me of that time during a US war game in Europe, the bad guy side tracked troop movements by using Tinder. People are so accustomed to using devices that opsec goes out the window.
